HAVING COMPLETED THE SINGAPORE SPARTAN SPRINT (5+KM, 20+ OBSTACLES) IN 2015, TRAINER JOHNNY AND A TEAM OF 7 OTHERS PARTICIPATED IN THE SINGAPORE SPARTAN SUPER (13+KM, 29+ OBSTACLES) ON 7TH MAY THIS YEAR.
Were there any improvements in the Spartan Race this time round? Or what could they have done better?
De.finitely there were improvements as compared to the previous race conducted in Singapore.
I’m glad that this time round we were having a trail run instead of flat terrain which made it tougher. The baggage drop off system was much more efficient too
What was the toughest obstacle for you? And what was your favourite?
As of now, I find all the obstacles manageable.
Oh ya, there was one obstacle; ring swing. I missed the last ring, spun and swung like an out of control monkey. It didn’t help that the ring in front of me that I needed to grab on to was spinning out of control too. Luckily, my team member, Travis, stopped the last ring from swinging and I managed to clear the obstacle.
My favourite was dipping into the pool of dirty water. It was like having root-beer float in a sauna room.
If i was joining the Spartan Race for the first time, what are 3 things i can do to better prepare myself for the race?
A definite must, especially if you are joining the Spartan Super & Beast. You don’t want to be walking the entire race.
As for me I prefer jogging under the sun without any music to train up my mental toughness (just make sure you are well conditioned and hydrated).
B) Strength/ Grip & Technique
I have seen many injuries during the race like guys falling from high obstacles (Ouch!), shoulder dislocation, cramp, skin peeling off etc.
An essential exercise for the Spartan Race is pull ups. Besides running, there are lots of obstacles that require you to execute a pulling motion.
Vary your pull ups with different grips. Being able to perform pull ups on a rope will be a huge bonus.
Technique is crucial. It hurts to see many participants clearing obstacles like the atlas stone and tire flip/pull with bad posture and technique. I suggest getting a coach to guide you with the basic principles of human bio-mechanics/movements.
Proper training programmes leads to progression and improvement. Train hard and smart. Make sure to taper down your training one week before the race and carb load 1-5 days beforehand, according on your individual needs.
D) Learning Experience
At some point in life, we never know when we will be receiving from or giving a little helping hand to someone.
Just like the obstacles in Spartan Race, we might need some encouragement or a shoulder to push on further.
Are you participating in the next Spartan Race?
YES. Our team has already registered for the Bintan Spartan BEAST (20+km, 35+ obstacles) on 19th Nov. We are definitely looking forward to the race.
